Name of guest speaker: Ann Hall.
Organisation: Nutrition talk.
Date: 9th of January.
What was discussed: In the second class of the day, we went down to the Home EC room to receive a talk on nutrition from Ann Hall. She introduced herself and got straight into the talk. She began speaking about the importance of having a breakfast in the morning. She said not to start a day off without a breakfast as your body can’t function properly on an empty stomach. She also showed us some portions of cereals and oats.
She spoke about the super six. This consisted of bananas, blueberries, broccoli and more. She told us how useful they were for our bodies. She also told us the importance of eating fruit and vegetables.
She went on to talk about how to feed our bodies properly before and after training. She told us to drink a glass of full fat milk after training to get back the protein that was burned off during the training session.
After she talked to us about calorie intake and how much girls and boys should have a day. She told us an astonishing fact that a scone that you buy in the shop is of the same calories as your dinner would be! She carried on to speak about the sugar content of Coke, Fanta and flavoured water.
Ann finished the talk with the statistics. The world health organisations says by 2030 Ireland will be the most obese country in the EU. This is truly shocking. she also told us that an extra layer to the food pyramid is being added. We thanked her for coming to talk to us and went to our next class with a lot learned.
Reflection: I learned a lot from this talk. I learned how important a breakfast can be and how such a small thing like a scone can be the same calories of a full sized dinner. I took a lot from listening to the guest speaker I now know if Ireland doesn't change its ways, we could be the most obese country by 2030.
This helped me achieve my aims and objectives of the year as I learned lots of things I didn't know before.
