Team: Eric, Aoife, Rose and myself.
Summary: Two weeks prior the competition, we were given the topics available to choose. We chose to write the speeches on this quote “Never forget that machines were made to serve humankind and not the other way around.” Eric, Aoife and Rose were going to be the speakers while I was the researcher and sub if needed.
We continued researching and writing the speeches for a week. Then Miss Dunne looked at them gave us constructive criticism and we then bettered the speeches. With practice they were ready for the competition.
On the night, we arrived early. When the competition started each mentor had the task to chose an envelope. Inside it would say the running order to when your team would speak. Luckily, we got to go last. Everyone else spoke great. When it was our time to speak, they spoke slow and clearly making sure to use hand gestures and keep eye contact. The second part of the competition was after each team spoke they were given an envelope with a unseen question. They had one minute to think then one chosen team member had to speak about it. Eric spoke for our team and did a great job.
We had tea and coffee after all the team’s speeches whilst the judge was making her decision. We also had a speech from Bishop John Kirby. When the verdict had been made she gave us all constructive criticism and announced the winner. WE WON! We all got plaques and one bigger plaque for the school. Now since we won we qualified for the Connacht competition.
The Connacht final was on the8th of March. We all drove down to Roscommon CBS. Eric, Rose and Aoife competed with great speeches and performed them to a very high standard. Unfortunately the other teams were also very good and this time we didn't make it to the All Ireland Final.
Reflection: I learned a lot from this experience. I learned how to work as a team and how much works it takes to write a speech. This helped me achieve my aims and objectives of the year as this can develop my CV and I got on better with my classmates because of it.
