Saint Vincent de Paul Talk
Name of guest speaker: Paddy Daly
Organisation: Saint Vincent de Paul.
Date: 11th of October.
What was discussed: Paddy introduced himself and began talking about when SVP was founded. He explained to us that Frédéric Ozanam founded it in 1833 and its in 143 countries worldwide. It was founded in Ireland in 1844.
He talked to us about his experiences in Haiti and brazil. He told us about how they made their houses. If they saw land unused they would plan an invasion. They would plan a time to run into the land and put up their houses. They would do this on the bank holidays mostly as there would be less military on duty. He also told us about country people moving into the city. People would move into the city if someone was sick or for job opportunities.
He also showed us a video about a father doing the iron man triathlon with his disabled son. It was an inspiring video to watch. The father swam 5km with his son in a dingy attached to him. He then cycled 180km with his son as a passenger and finally ran 42km pushing his son all in under 16 hours.
He talked to us about how SVP helps people with depression, gambling problems, problems at home and others. Finally, we thanked him for coming in and talking to us.
Reflection: I learned about the iron man in the Olympics and I also learned that SVP was founded in Ireland in 1844. I learned all about who Saint Vincent de Paul helps and how I could get involved in helping too.
I took a lot from listening to the guest speaker. I was inspired from watching the video he showed us to work harder and use the opportunities I get.
This helped me to achieve my aims and objectives for the year as I learned things I didn’t know before about Saint Vincent de Paul.
