Name of course: GAA Coaching, Future Leaders.
Teacher: Kevin and Bosco.
Duration of course: 8 weeks.
Summary: We gathered in room V and got introduced to Kevin and Bosco. They explained to us what we were going to cover today and then got started. This course is so we can become able to help out and coach young kids from our local hurling clubs. We get a certificate at the end of the course.
There were 4 modules we needed to complete. The first module describes the six traits needed to become a good coach. You have to respect everyone, provide demonstrations, observe to see everyone is doing it correctly, analyse and make decisions, you have to be able to explain what to do simply and quickly. Finally, you have to be able to give feedback.
The second module described the different movements in Gaelic games. Some examples were Agility, balance, coordination, running, jumping and more.
The third module described the different skills of hurling e.g. the dribble, the jab lift, the hand pass. The final module described how to coach young people using modified games and other things.
After going through all the modules, we were divided into four groups. Each group was given a skill of hurling and we all had to come up with an easy way to describe and teach it to everyone. We had to do this by making up games to play. We all went down to the gym, and presented our skill to the year.
At the end of the day we all learned a lot about coaching. We thanked Kevin and Bosco before them leaving. We now have the task of managing and carrying out hurling blitz for the first and second years over eight weeks using all we learned throughout the day.
Reflection:
I learned how an adult only has the attention span of eight seconds so a child has even less. This taught me you have to be smart and precise in what you want to say to get your point across.
This helped me to achieve my aims and objectives of the year as I learned things I never knew before and also the cert I get from this course can develop my CV further.
