Where we went: Knock Co. Mayo
Date: 14th of September. We stayed there for 5 hours.
Summary: We arrived at knock around half ten and made our way down to the presentation room. We got name tags and then got divided into the different tables to form a group of all different schools. Michael MC Conn started the day off and welcomed us. Fr. Peter MC Verry was the first speaker. He spoke to us about homelessness. He told us that everyone that is homeless are not drug or drink abusers. He made us more aware about the homeless crisis. He started the Peter MC Verry trust as he saw a nine years old child sleeping on the street as he didn’t want to see his parents fight. Peter also told us more personal stories of people he encountered. After his speech, we discussed what we just listened to in our groups.
The next speaker was Dr. Cara Augustonborg. She talked about plastic bottles and how bad they are for the environment. She also talked to us about global warming. After her speech, we discussed again what we just heard in our groups.
After lunch, our third speaker was John Lonergan. He spoke to us about community and how we can be a part of our community even if it was just for one hour a week. Like before after his speech we discussed it in our groups.
Our final speaker was Joanne O Riordan. She spoke to us about her life and how she lives with no limbs. She spoke to us about mental health also and how she is positive about her life. She won a lot of awards in her lifetime and she’s only 21 years old. She also told us about the robot that is in the making to help her with everyday things.
We then said goodbyes and went home. We arrived home around four thirty.
Reflection: I learned more about homelessness than I did before and am now more aware of the crisis. I learned about the effect plastic bottles have on the environment. I took a lot from this trip. I will always remember the personal stories peter told us and will always appreciate the family I have today.
I will also remember to appreciate the life I live.
This trip helped me to achieve my aims as I learned things I didn’t know before and I got on better with my classmates.
